Xx.. Attitude ..xX Marshall is portrayed as a conniving, overly sarcastic flirt who is very concerned about the way he is perceived by others, often making very illogical and self-destructive decisions in order to keep his “bad boy” image. He does depict a more sensitive side to him on rare occasion, juxtaposed against acts of betrayal and theft.
His rural Southern accent/drawl, stubborn cocky attitude, selfishness, machismo, and folksy use of oft-abrasive nicknames belie his sophisticated and tender sides as an avid reader of literature and a caring lover—elements of his personality that have become more apparent as he has spent more time on the island.
He has a persistent use of smart-aleck (but accurate) nicknames, has low frustration tolerance, poor anger management skills, poor conflict resolution skills, poor impulse control, attachment and trust issues, low tolerance for stupidity, latent heroic tendencies; and/or a desire to belong to a group, but limited knowledge of how to “play nicely” with others.
When he first arrived at Seraph Island, Marshal’s drifter instincts took over and he began hoarding anything salvageable he could get his hands on. This included stealing from barns, some homes, boats and even some shops to leverage power. Giving him a shady reputation amongst the rest of the survivors. But since then, he has became a bit more of a watered down version of his former self and quite protective of the people whom he feels ‘a connection’ to. Being on the island has forced him to come face-to-face with the reality that not everyone is bad and not everything is bad. He still continues to be a very conniving, angry and overly sarcastic guy, but he is slowly learning.

Xx.. History ..xX Marshal Coulson was born in Jasper, Alabama, where he attended both primary and secondary school. When he was a child, his parents owned a small farm with about five horses, so he learnt how to ride at a young age. His father drunk heavily and often neglected Marshal, causing the young man to make some very brash and stupid decisions in life, resulting in the cold and manipulative person that he was prior to coming to the Island. Both his parents died when he was eight - though no one really knows how - and he was sent to love with his Aunt and Uncle. When he was a teenager he developed more of an interest in motorcycles, and cars, and he began his first job working at a car yard, selling parts and fixing cars.
At the age of eighteen, he left Jasper, and went to study at the University of Georgia for a year, but dropped out during the first semester of his second year to take a chance to travel before he turned twenty-one.
Marshal’s first destination was Australia, where he lived for five years – much longer than he had planned – although the reason why he stayed for so long is unclear he has hinted that a woman was involved. While still in Australia, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting Warren Truss during a bar fight. As a result, Marshal was deported from Australia and banned from returning; he left aboard an Oceanic Flight. After falling asleep on the plane about half way through the flight, he suddenly awoke – still sitting in his seat with his luggage scattered around him – in the middle of a Forrest.
He walked for about an hour before he found the town and has lived there since, taking up a job as a bar tender at the pub, and living in a small two bedroom house near Jerry’s car yard.
He also owns an old 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. Marshall brought it off of Jerry who had retained ownership since his late 30’s. Jerry had found the car, quite old and battered with vines growing through the motor, paint chipping from it and dents all through it, in the jungle a few years after he arrived on the Island and had plans of restoring it to it’s former glory.
It wasn’t until Marshall arived up, and showed an interest in the car that Jerry finally decided to sell it. Marshall paid him whatever cash he had at the time, and began work on restoring it.
Only one years on, now sitting proudly outside Marshalls house, the Hemi now looks like a brand new car, painted orange, with automatic slap stick transmission, power brakes, rally rims, wood grain console, chrome exhaust tips, bumper guards, black interior, fog lights, and Dana rear-end, this car is now a complete package.
